Julian Assange is taken into custody from the Ecuadorian embassy in London.
Wikileaks cofounder Julian Assange has been arrested while seeking
asylum at the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where he has been staying since 2012.
He is wanted for federal conspiracy in the US, and sexual assault allegations
in Sweden.
Assange was held in a central London police station before appearing in court for
a charge of failing to surrender to the court in 2012.
He was found guilty of this charge and sentenced to 12 months prison time.
The UK must decide whether to
extradite him to the US to answer the charges by the Department of Justice for
releasing classified information.
Assange's lawyer Jennifer Robinson said they would be fighting the extradition request.
She said it set a "dangerous precedent" where any journalist could face
US charges for "publishing truthful information about the United States".
